DraftKings has agreed a deal with data provider Opta

DraftKings has continued to prepare ahead of its UK launch by improving its football offering through a deal with sports data provider Opta.

The daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator will use Opta to provide live football performance statistics from the three competitions it covers - Major League Soccer, the English Premier League and Uefa Champions League.

DraftKings said that it has engaged Perform-owned Opta “in order to enhance the customer experience of its soccer product, in anticipation of an upcoming expansion into new markets”, and will now allow customers to select a full 11-man squad instead of the previous eight picks.

“DraftKings partnership with Opta marks one of many steps we are taking to adapt our product as we work to serve and excite new audiences around the world,” said DraftKings vice-president of games, Mark Nerenberg. “Opta’s renowned sports data and analysis capabilities will enhance our games, making them more dynamic for our fans and further establish our offerings as the true leader in DFS.”

In addition to the squad expansion, DratfKings’ scoring categories in football will now also include statistics on tackles and passes intercepted, adding more strategy and excitement to the daily fantasy game.

DraftKings said that the addition of historical statistics will also “significantly improve” the current game and “develop a more engaging product”. US-based DraftKings is to launch in the UK before the end of this year, and also plans to move into a number of other international markets in 2016.

Angus McNab, vice-president of content (North America) at Perform Group, added: “The daily fantasy space has shown some real innovation in recent times and we are delighted to be working with DraftKings, one of the leaders in this field.I am looking forward to continuing this relationship and giving their fans the best possible experience.”
