Sports betting inspires Italian gambling growth

Wednesday, May 4, 2016

Sports betting grew by 42 per cent in Italy during the first three months of 2016.

The vertical expanded to €96m ($110.3m) in Q1 according to figures released by the Italian authorities, with online sportsbook revenue rising by 97 per cent to €36m.

While operators were boosted by favourable sporting results in January, the sector’s growth was attributed to a reduction in gaming duties, with decreased costs allowing legal operators to compete with their unlicensed rivals.

Total online gambling revenue was at €267m, up 21% on the same period last year, with casino takings up 38 per cent to €106m.

Cash game poker was down 18 per cent to €20.7m, with tournament revenue up 6.6 per cent to €22.4m and bingo increasing by 2.9 per cent to €7.5m.

TotallyGaming.com says: “The growth in sports betting and overall gambling shows that the Italian market is an area of huge potential for operators.”
