iGaming start-ups urged to 'think international' from the start

Monday, October 20, 2014

Jens-Philipp Klein, the chief financial officer of Atlantic Labs, urged iGaming start-ups to adopt an international focus “from day one” as he opened the Berlin Gaming Tour at the offices of Atlantic Internet today (Monday).

Ahead of the full start of EiG 2013 at Arena Berlin tomorrow, Klein and two representatives of young Berlin-based companies – Jacky Media co-founder Baris Tamer and Couchsport chief executive and co-founder Alex Napetschnig – provided an informative insight into Berlin’s start-up scene.

“Berlin has a lot to offer to start-ups,” Klein said.

“There is a relatively low cost of living, even when the local economy was catastrophic there was a music and art scene that provided a breeding ground for creativity, and it is also very international.

“We like our companies to think internationally from day one. We are still relatively new to this industry (of iGaming) so we have learnt a lot from our partners.”

Klein and his fellow speakers highlighted the significant shift to mobile within the iGaming industry.

Napetschnig (pictured) added: “Mobile is not just about making the screen smaller. It is about being accessible on the go.

“Also people are on their mobiles for a limited amount of time, so mobile needs to be simple and should not copy the web. Less is more on mobile.”

Tamer insisted that there remain plenty of opportunities in the mobile iGaming sector for innovative companies.

“This is a field that is going to grow tremendously,” Tamer added, before explaining how his company manages white-label affiliate programmes on mobile devices.

“Most mobile products have a lifespan, but revenue-share deals can prolong the monetisation of a service, through advertising,” he added.
