INSIGHT

TotallyGaming.com: When was your big break in your career?

Dorothy Creaven: "Starting my own technology company, Element Software, in late 2010 was my best career move. Having learned so much during my time in the corporate world, working for myself gave me the complete autonomy that I was looking for. I love the pace of running a company, especially in the mobile technology industry… you need to move fast to keep ahead of the market, and that works for me."

TotallyGaming.com: What is the best piece of career advice you have ever received?

DC: “It would have to be: 'Do one thing every day that scares you.' I’ve learned that the quickest way to grow is to be pushed out of my comfort zone so I like to try it as often as possible."

TotallyGaming.com: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in your career?

DC: "In the early days of the company, managing cash flow was always a challenge. We had to build a sizeable product on a not-so-sizeable budget and we had to be highly creative as every penny counted. However, we succeeded and learned a lot along the way about running a tight ship."

TotallyGaming.com: What is the most difficult decision you have ever taken in your career?

DC: "Deciding to step away from the security of a corporate job and stepping out into the unknown world of entrepreneurship. However, I find that challenges do tend to pay off so it was definitely worth taking the risk."

TotallyGaming.com: What sort of qualities do you look for in an applicant for a job?

DC: "We have a top-class team in Element Wave with great energy and passion for both the iGaming and technology industries. When interviewing potential candidates to join the team, I mostly look for people who are very sharp and passionate about their work. They need to be quick thinking, autonomous, diligent and most importantly, have a positive attitude."

TotallyGaming.com: What do you believe is the key ingredient to putting together a successful team of staff members?

DC: "It’s important to have open and honest two-way communication with staff. Sharing regular feedback on their work, as well as more in depth business updates helps to build trust and strengthens relationships. That, plus chocolate croissants on a Friday morning!"

TotallyGaming.com: What would be your key piece of advice for someone starting out in the betting and gaming industry?

DC: "Get out there and meet as many people that work in the industry as possible. From bookmakers to analysts, to CRM experts, right through to CEO level. Making sure you fully understand the key challenges for all stakeholders is crucial to gaining an in-depth understanding of the industry itself."

TotallyGaming.com: What are your future career aspirations?

DC: "We have just launched our new Mobile Moments by Element Wave mobile CRM platform specifically developed with the iGaming industry in mind. So over the next 12 months, I’m looking forward to seeing how our technology can really make a difference to our current and future customers. Thinking more long-term, I have a few more ideas up my sleeve so will be working on those to see which ones we can take to market over the coming years."
