The new unit has been formed to deal with organised crime in BC casinos

Authorities in British Columbia are establishing a 22-member police group dedicated to taking money laundering and other organised crime activity out of the Canadian province’s casinos.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong said the province – which includes Vancouver - is making a five-year commitment that will also include dedicated inspectors from the Gaming Policy Enforcement Branch and have a budget of $4.3m a year. He said suspicious currency transactions of $20.7m last July led in part to the creation of the new unit, which will be partly funded by the federal police.

“British Columbians that attend our casino and gaming establishments do so in the knowledge that they are participating in a lawful form of entertainment,” said De Jong. “They want to know and deserve to know that the people sitting at the tables with them are doing so on the same basis.”

Public Safety Minister Mike Morris said he expects the new team to perform better than a previous dedicated police unit that was federally funded and not well integrated with provincial agencies. A provincially funded RCMP team that targeted illegal gambling in British Columbia was disbanded in 2009.

The new unit will be administered by BC’s Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit, which focuses on organised crime.

TotallyGaming.com says: “With restrictions on the exchange of small bills for large currency denominations and the temporary banning of people from establishments while they are being investigated, BC seems determined to crack down on a problem within its casino industry.”
