The final took place at Grosvenor Casino Coventry over the weekend

After enjoying a 20% growth in entrants this year, the organisers of the Goliath poker tournament are looking to surpass the 7,000 mark and beat the record held by the WSOP for the most entries into a live poker tournament in 2018.

The 2017 Goliath poker tournament final took place at the UK’s Grosvenor Casino Coventry July 27 to August 6. The fifth edition of the competition welcomed 6,385 entries, up 20% on the Main Event in 2016 and cementing its position as the largest live poker tournament outside of Las Vegas.

The players generated a prize pool of nearly £640,000, with the UK’s Elliott Marais scooping the first-place sum of £85,000 and the coveted Goliath 2017 trophy.

“Once again Grosvenor Casinos are blown away by the support of the Goliath over the years, seeing growth of over 20% from last year alone,” the organisers said earlier this week.

“Not long after the final hand was dealt, talk turns to the 2018 Goliath with Grosvenor Casinos’ new goal to surpass the 7,000 mark and attempt to beat the record held by the WSOP for the most entries into a live poker tournament.”

Discussing the ongoing success of the tournament, Alex Martin, commercial manager for Grosvenor Casinos’ poker operations, told TotallyGaming.com: “Goliath is growing every year, which is mainly down to the increased live and online offerings we have available.”

“More players are now qualifying through our new online mobile product, which is increasing the appetite even more for amateurs and professionals alike.”

Grosvenor Casinos continues to bring poker to all parts of the country. This weekend, the 25/25 event will take place in Luton, outside of London. This will be followed on by the popular Summer Sizzler, which will cover the length and breadth of the country.

In September, Grosvenor Casinos’ premier flagship tour, the GUKPT, will be arriving in Leeds.

The 2018 Goliath will be in Coventry from July 26 to August 5.

Totally Gaming says: The whopping prize pool of nearly £640,000 has cemented Goliath’s position as the largest live poker tournament outside of Las Vegas. This year’s event was just 700 entrants shy of beating WSOP’s tournament record, and so the race to become the king of live poker is now well and truly on.
