Donaco International, the Asia-focused casino and hospitality operator, is planning to add approximately 100 gaming tables to Star Vegas Resort & Club in Cambodia.

The company, which operates the casino near the Thai border along with the Aristo International Hotel in Yunnan, China, said the additional tables would help it to leverage growth among international customers.

ASX-listed Donaco is currently transitioning to full management control of Star Vegas, after the management contract with a Thai vendor ended on June 30.

The addition of the new tables follows last month’s announcement that the company had enlisted Vivo Tower, an international casino marketing agency, to attract junkets from Macau, Hong Kong, Malaysia and elsewhere to bring players to the property.

Under the terms of the deal, Vivo Tower will pay Donaco $1.5 million in 2018, increasing to $3 million in subsequent years.

Located in Poipet, Star Vegas opened in 1999 and currently features 140 gaming tables, 1,500 slots and 385 hotel rooms.

Over recent years, the border town has developed into a thriving casino hub. A cluster of at least eight facilities around the town are all competing to attract tourists, primarily from neighbouring Thailand, where gambling remains off-limits.

According to the country’s Finance Ministry, casinos operating in Cambodia generated tax revenues of $48 million in 2016, up 38% on the $34.7 million handed to state coffers in the previous year.

At the end of 2016, there were 77 valid casino licences across the country, of which 65 were currently operational.

Totally Gaming says: As Donaco transitions to full management control of Star Vegas Resort, the group is clearly looking to maximise the facility’s cross-border revenue potential. The ‘new era’ at Star Vegas commenced on July 1 with a VIP launch event attended by Manchester United Class of ’92 players and a week-long poker tournament. Now, it is hoped, the near doubling of table games at the casino will result in the operation enjoying year-round maximum hotel capacity.
