Gala Bingo's Simon Wykes believes his sector has a key role to play in responsible gambling

Bingo has a key role to play in improving social responsibility standards within the gambling industry, according to Simon Wykes, the head of Gala Bingo, who was speaking as his company became the latest member of Senet Group.

Wykes, the chief executive of Gala Leisure, said that the far-reaching appeal of the sector as a social pursuit means it must lead the charge to reduce problem gambling.

Gala Bingo, which is the leading bingo operator in the UK with more than 130 halls, joins Paddy Power Betfair, William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes, Scotbet.com and Sky Betting & Gambling as members of the independent gambling watchdog that was formed in 2014.

“Bingo is recognised as being a community-based activity at the softest edge of gaming,” Wykes said. “As such, we place great importance on responsible gambling and can see the merits in working together as an industry rather than just as a sector within it.

“We look forward to working with the Senet Group in the interest of the industry and our customers.”

Wanda Goldwag, chair of Senet, said the addition of Gala Bingo would further the organisation’s reach across the gambling sector.

Goldwag added: “Today marks an important milestone as more sectors from across the gambling industry recognise the importance of promoting responsible gambling standards. We are delighted to welcome the first bingo brand to the Senet Group, and look forward to working with Gala Bingo as more businesses from across the industry make the commitment to submit to the independent oversight we provide.”

TotallyGaming.com says: It is important that responsible gambling standards should apply within all sectors, including those considered the softest. The addition of Gala Bingo means that Senet’s reach is growing throughout the UK industry
