EiG speaker John Straw said that innovation must be at an operator's core

Gaming operators face competition from across multiple sectors and not just their traditional rivals, according to digital strategy expert and John Straw.

The chairman of travel operator Thomas Cook’s digital advisory board, who will be a speaker at next week’s EiG event in Berlin, has told operators that they must stay a step ahead through basing their business strategy around innovation.

Straw, speaking to TotallyGaming.com, named companies such as Facebook as those that could threaten the hegemony of the existing industry leaders, and said that operators must be open to disruptive technology.

“The industry needs to continually reinvent business models around new technology before someone else - like Facebook - does it for them,” said Straw, who is the author of iDisrupted and also holds senior roles with a number of technology companies.

Straw’s session at EiG is entitled ‘Vision: Disruptive technology leads to disrupted consumers – the technology and the opportunities’, and in advance of his appearance noted the rise and fall of satellite navigation systems as an example of how a disruptive technology does not stay disruptive forever.

“Disruptive technology redefines a market or creates a new one,” he said. “At a basic level that goes back to the early days of satnavs, that disrupted the entire mapping market - and essentially killed it - but the days of the dedicated satnav were then disrupted by the smartphone.

“Another example would be the exponential rise in the efficiency of battery technology that will totally dispute the power generation market within a matter of years and cause balance-sheet losses of billions of pounds.”
