Unikrn has added odds on Rocket League

Rocket League maintains a unique position in the esports ecosystem. It’s fast paced, it’s exciting, it’s simple to play but hard to master, and it’s exceptionally easy to understand. It’s rocket cars, that have the capacity to explode, playing football. It’s also a legitimate esports title with the skill level at the top astounding at times. Now, with Unikrn, you can bet on it.

Unikrn CEO Rahul Sood told Totally Gaming: “It's rare that a fantastic game like Rocket League comes out of nowhere and gains traction quickly. The stars align when a large player base is formed, teams come together, and ultimately this leads to high viewership. As the world's leading esports bookmaker Unikrn looks for such opportunities and it's almost exclusively community driven.”

The game’s San Diego based developer Psyonix has a lot planned this year to enhance its competitive scene, and most recently it has signed deals with the likes of Brisk and Old Spice. Its commercial appeal is undoubtable and with a growing audience, of which a number are under the age of 18, it’s not surprising that Psyonix quickly moved to distance itself from any involvement in or support for gambling.

VP Jeremy Dunham told GameSpot: "Psyonix is not affiliated with Unikrn, nor do we support or endorse online betting for our game." Sood was equally quick to confirm that the publisher had no involvement with the company’s move to add odds for Rocket League. He commented: “However, we love the game, and like other titles on our sportsbook, we create odds and content on the pro matches and their top-tier tournaments."

So far only the regulators in Australia have approved real money betting on Rocket League (Unikrn is partnered with Tabcorp) and there is no word from the UK yet. Rocket League is also better placed for widespread betting from punters than the likes of Dota 2 or League of Legends in which a number of the markets themselves will cause confusion.

As an esports only bookmaker it’s no great surprise that Unikrn was the first to add esports, but now we’ll have to play the waiting game to see whether other frontrunners in the space such as Sky Bet, Pinnacle, Bet365 and more move to add odds for it. The third season of the game’s main competition, the Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS), is currently underway.

Totally Gaming says: Rocket League is extremely well placed as a proper esports title to bring it ‘to the masses’. As such real money betting will follow but it’s vital that this is done via the proper channels, which is exactly what Unikrn have done via their partnership with Tabcorp.
