David Bowie's Blackstar is the strong favourite to claim the coveted prize

David Bowie is the bookies’ strong favourite to posthumously be awarded this year’s Mercury Prize for his album Blackstar.

Bowie has been priced at 1/2 at Betway with the next contenders some way off at 7/1 for Anohni and Kano respectively. Blackstar was released just two days before the death of Bowie, and as a hero to a huge amount of contemporary musicians and the general public alike he’s heavily expected to win.

Betway’s Alan Alger, commented on the market and told Totally Gaming: “The betting world agrees that this year is all about David Bowie and he’s odds-on at 1/2 to land the Mercury music prize. Bowie was a hero of the music world to many and he’s proving very popular with the punters too.

“The UK grime scene is going from strength to strength and Kano and Skepta are both quietly fancied 7/1 shots.”

Kano’s Made in the Manor, his fifth studio album, was a hugely popular album with track and looks a strong outsider wager.

Other contenders on the list include Skepta (8/1), Michael Kiwanuka (8/1), Radiohead (14/1), The 1975 (16/1) and a few more at higher odds.

The Mercury Prize winner will be announced tonight. The judges panel, who make the final decision, includes musicians such as Jarvis Cocker, Jessie Ware and Jamie Cullum, in addition to broadcasters and journalists.

Totally Gaming says: The Mercury Prize is an interesting betting market and generates some attention in the UK. Bowie looks a sure fire bet for his superb finale though Kano’s Made in the Manor should get its fair share of votes.
