Education to be offered on 'outside influences related to gambling'

The PGA Tour, alongside Genius Sports, is to implement a new comprehensive integrity programme effective from 1st January 2018.

All facets of competition on each of the six tours operated under the PGA banner will be covered, with education offered to all personnel from players through to volunteers.

Andy Levinson, senior vice president tournament administration for the PGA Tour, told “The PGA Tour Integrity Program was established to protect the integrity of the players, the competition and the PGA Tour brand.  There is betting on our competition taking place around the world, and we want to be better informed about that activity to avoid any negative influences.

“While we have not seen any issues in our sport as there have been in other professional sports related to corruption, we understand that professional golf is not immune to those pressures.  So, it is important that we maintain vigilance in this area.

“Genius Sports is a recognized leader in bet monitoring. We reviewed many service providers and were most impressed with Genius Sports’ full suite of monitoring, educational and advisory services.”

Genius Sports and the PGA are to work together to educate players, caddies and officials on issues such as bet monitoring, identifying and reporting corruption and the consequences related to such activity.

The Program, which aims ‘to protect its competitions from potential outside influences related to gambling,’ states that its mission is: “To maintain integrity and prevent and mitigate betting-related corruption in PGA Tour competitions – ensuring competitions always reflect, and appear to reflect, the best efforts of the players, while protecting the welfare of the players and others involved with the PGA Tour – through clear policies and regulations, ongoing education and training, and effective and consistent monitoring and enforcement functions.”

Mark Locke, CEO at genius sports group, said: “We are delighted to partner with the PGA Tour to drive its integrity initiatives. Protecting the integrity of sport has never been of greater importance and it requires forward-thinking organizations such as the PGA Tour to proactively invest in both proven technology and education driven by true expertise.”

Totally Gaming says:  Golf is not a sport that springs to mind where betting corruption is concerned, and the PGA is rightly taking appropriate steps to ensure that this remains the case.  Through a deep educational process all those immediately concerned with golf will have a clear understanding of the consequences of such activity.
