News UK reveals big ambitions for Sun Bets

The Sun has a newspaper circulation of almost 2 million, with around 1.3 million website visits per day

News UK has told TotallyGaming.com that it wants its new Sun Bets sportsbook to become a “household name” in the UK.

It was revealed last week that News UK – owner of the UK’s most popular newspaper, The Sun – had signed a deal with Australian gaming operator Tabcorp to launch and operate the Sun Bets website from 2016 in a 10-year deal.

While News UK would not reveal details of the tendering process that concluded with Tabcorp gaining the contract, including which other firms were involved, Helen Collier, News UK’s head of communications, explained the extent of the company's plans for Sun Bets.   

“We want Sun Bets to become a household name in the coming years,” Collier told TotallyGaming.com. “We expect it to become a really important part of our business.

“This launch is in line with our digital expansion, and follows on from the success of Sun Bingo and Dream Team, which has more than one million players.

“We are at a very early stage with the brand, but the hard work begins now. We believe that with our brand and reach and Tabcorp’s expertise, we can create a fantastic product.”

Meanwhile, Tabcorp subsidiary Sky Racing World has partnered with the Spanish gaming operator Codere to bring Australian horse racing to Brazil.

Sky Racing World will be providing wagering on Australian races exclusively to the South American country via Codere’s upcoming advance deposit wagering (ADW) brand Suaposta and various domestic tracks.

David Haslett, president and chief executive of Sky Racing World, said: “Our partnership with Codere allows South American horse-racing bettors to wager for the first time on Australian races, which as in the US and North America, will diversify their choice rather than competing with the domestic racing schedule.

“Codere’s strong position in Latin America and the brand’s relationships with iconic local racing venues make it an ideal partnership for us in the Brazilian market.”
