New South Wales has successfully prosecuted two gaming companies over illegal promotions

Gaming companies look set for further scrutiny in Australia after New South Wales (NSW) announced that it is pursuing any contravention of strict promotional rules.

With police investigations into telephone wagering and a review of online gaming laws already under way in Australia, NSW’s Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing (OLGR) said it is pursuing companies that it believes to be illegally offering residents any credit, voucher or reward as an inducement to participate in gambling or open a betting account.

The announcement comes after it successfully prosecuted Sportsbetting.com.au and ClassicBet in the last week, with the two companies fined and ordered to pay a combined total of Aus$7,950 (€5,009/US$5,668) for breaching sections of the Racing Administration Regulation 2012 that relate to promotions.

Sean Goodchild, OLGR acting director of compliance and enforcement, said: “The wagering industry is warned they are being monitored - including social media and company websites - and if material is found to offer illegal gambling inducements to NSW residents then action will be taken. Further prosecutions are currently pending against several other wagering operators.”

Sportsbetting.com.au, which is based in Northern Territory, pleaded guilty to publishing two advertisements on its website earlier this year that offered bonuses to NSW customers who deposited funds into betting accounts.

ClassicBet offered a ‘Premium Rewards Program’ that was also deemed illegal, with the NSW-based operator fined $1,000 and ordered to pay $4,500 in legal costs.
