SportPesa is to sponsor Kenya's two biggest football teams and the country's Premier League

SportPesa has stamped its mark on Kenyan football after becoming the sponsor of the nation’s top tier football competition and its two biggest clubs.

The betting operator, which is based in Nairobi and describes itself as “Africa’s No.1 sports betting platform”, has signed five-year deals with the Kenyan Premier League, as well as rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, which are said to be worth KSh250m (€2.2m/$2.5m) each.

The firm also backs other football competitions in Kenya, and recently agreed a Sh10m deal to provide sponsored kits to all 40 teams in a regional league.

The growth of betting in Africa will be discussed at next month’s WrB Africa event in Nigeria, while an update on regulatory developments in Kenya will also be given.

A Sportpesa statement added: “Our eyes are set on both bettering soccer in Kenya in general and propelling Kenya's national team to participate in 2022 Fifa World Cup.

“This sponsorship heralds a new dawn for the world of football in which the welfare of our soccer players and stars will be enhanced.”

WrB Africa, which is organised by ICE Totally Gaming operator Clarion Events, will offer two days of insight into the sub-Saharan Africa gambling industry when it takes place in Nigeria next month. With an extensive learning programme, led by figures from gaming authorities and senior executives, will discover more about the current regulatory landscape and gain further understanding of key market opportunities.

* WrB Africa will take place in Lagos, Nigeria from April 11-12. For more information visit http://africa.wrbriefing.com
