Gambling operators will not be able to advertise on team jerseys

The NBA is set to bar daily fantasy partner FanDuel from displaying its logo on team jerseys when shirt sponsorship is introduced next year.

In the same week that mid-table English Premier League football team West Bromwich Albion signed a £5m (€6.3m/$7.2m) deal with betting operator K8 Group, the North American basketball league said its teams would not be allowed to sign shirt sponsorship deals with gambling companies, as well as firms involved in the alcohol, media, politics and tobacco sectors.

While FanDuel and its rivals are currently fighting several US state Attorney Generals who have categorised them as gambling operators, reports from North America suggest that the NBA will not allow daily fantasy sports (DFS) logos on team jerseys.

FanDuel agreed a four-year partnership to become the ‘official one-day fantasy basketball game’ of the NBA in 2014. As part of the deal, the league was granted an undisclosed equity share in the daily fantasy operator and a seat on its board. FanDuel also has partnerships in place with 16 NBA teams, while nine other franchises are associated with DraftKings.

While not allowed to display logos on team shirts, the partnerships give DFS operators the right to advertise extensively at venues and through broadcast and digital channels.

TotallyGaming.com says: “NBA teams are clearly missing out on big bucks by prohibiting gambling and DFS operators from advertising. It will be interesting to see how this changes in the coming years, with NBA commissioner Adam Silver suggesting that the league could support and even campaign for legalised gambling.”
