The Austrian sports betting firm has acquired the portfolio previously owned by Tipico

After acquiring Tipico’s Danish retail betting portfolio, Niko Steinkrauß, managing director of Merkur Sportwetten described the Danish market as an ‘attractive sports betting market.’

The deal will not only see Austrian betting operator, Cashpoint (Gauselmann Group subsidiary) expand into the Danish market, but it will also see Tipico end its retail presence within Denmark.

Cashpoint will acquire three betting shops in Copenhagen and a further retail point on the island of Funen in Odense. Tipico will continue to service the Danish betting market through its online gambling verticals. Cashpoint will now operate a total of six betting shops within Denmark.

At present Gauselmann Group’s Cashpoint subsidiary has operations in a number of European markets. Established in 1996, Cashpoint has both land-based operations in the form of more than 5,000 betting outlets and online betting operations in a number of regulated jurisdictions.

Niko Steinkrauß, managing director of Merkur Sportwetten GmbH told “Although it’s only a small country, Denmark – like all northern countries – is an attractive sports betting market with approximately double the per capita income of Germany. While the online share is very high, the stationary segment also offers attractive growth potential yet to be tapped into.

“Our Cashpoint brand has over the past several years established a position as the leading non-government provider and has thus contributed to the growth dynamic in this area.

“The focus here was on a high degree of coverage with high-quality shop-in-shop outlets. The acquisition of Tipico’s stationary activities marks a quantum leap forward in the development of our proprietary and franchise-operated betting shops pillar.”

Totally Gaming says: The Danish market may not be the biggest market, but it can provide Cashpoint with a great opportunity for expansion as a sports betting operator. Denmark is a country of passionate followers of sport.
